Behavior reunited with the Museum of Modern Art to design a multiplatform companion website for the exhibition Picasso: Guitars 1912–1914. The show highlights a breakthrough moment in Cubism and features over 40 works detailing the artist's inspiration and techniques for collaging, drawing, painting, and constructing.

Conceptually the user experience centers on Picasso's studio. The composition allows users to see various paintings, drawings and sculpture positioned next to each other for users to compare. We want visitors to get a sense of what it was like to have such a large body of work in a single environment and think about their influenced over one another. Users are invited to explore the work on multiple levels by rolling over the piece to see a magnified view revealing high-resolution details of rich colors and layered textures. We created opportunities for MoMA curators to feature audio commentary from a variety of notable contributors that was updated throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Big Picture Learning is a worldwide not-for-profit network that generates and sustains innovative, personalized schools that work in tandem with local communities to pioneer education. BigPicture.org allows participating schools to share, communicate, raise funds and awareness, and locate new areas in which they can be effective.

The Big Picture leadership team came to Behavior with growing pains: they were producing lots of great content and new ideas, overflowing their site's architecture. By working on cost-effective solutions for content management and effective communication, we found the right means to help Big Picture take the next steps. As part of the revitalization, we worked with Big Picture's fresh rebranding, created by legendary graphic designer Milton Glaser.

Through the development of highly customized, open-source content management solutions, we created an easy-to-use WordPress system that allows for easy maintenance and sophisticated display. The Big Picture team can now fluently present exciting new projects, podcasts, and video content with aplomb. Reworking the user experience helped focus content for students and parents, educators, policy makers, and everyone interested in learning more.

As a non-profit entity, Big Picture has an obvious need to target and inspire new donors to the cause. Behavior helped shape call-to-action strategies, and leveraged proven solutions like PayPal to ensure that contributions are a snap. We also developed engaging interactive modules to literally help put Big Picture on the map, and help visitors find profiles of alternative schools in their area.

Behavior designed the web site and kiosk virtual browsing interface for the MoMA exhibition for German Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Kirchner is renowned for his Street Scenes series, created between 1913 and 1915. This series is considered by many to be the highpoint of Kirchner's career as a whole and its seven paintings are showcased with sixty related prints and drawings.

The web site features selections from 3 sketchbooks. The exhibition is organized around four themes: “City Scenes”; “the Nude Outside”; “the Nude in the Studio”; and “the Cabaret”.

The remaining design inspiration for the Kirchner site came from notions of passing time, elongated figures, and glimpses into the worlds of others.

The “Setting the Stage” section provides both a biographical and contextual view into the life and work of Kirchner as he progressed toward his Street Scenes masterpieces. The vertical slats allow the user to explore the subject matter and highlight points of interest upon rollover. The interactivity allows vibrant colors to stand above the remaining content, cast as duo and mono-tone treatments. The other elements recede into the background.

We created an online destination that personifies the diversified needs of its multi-generational audience and appeals to a variety of tastes, ages, and Web abilities. To enhance the usability of AARP’s impressive subject matter we reorganized and restructured the various pathways through which searched-for-information is retrieved, simplifying and greatly improving content accessibility.

One of the main attractions is the site’s social media and networking elements. Behavior used cutting-edge community building features providing members with the tools and opportunity to build their individual AARP online identity.

For their exhibition Georges Seurat: The Drawings, the Museum of Modern Art engaged Behavior to design a companion website in addition to a kiosk where visitors can securely explore Seurat’s four surviving sketchbooks.

We embraced the opportunity to engage the obstacles involved in collecting, digitizing, and choreographing the assorted raw materials and translating them into a single, intuitive interface. The kiosk we designed is an all-access pass to otherwise privileged material and adds a multidimensional layer that heightens the experience and allure of the exhibition.

“The Museum of Modern Art’s elegantly plain exhibition of Georges Seurat’s drawings begins with an unexpectedly extraordinary moment of computerized art viewing.” ~ Roberta Smith, New York Times

Behavior redesigned AARP’s online publication—AARP Bulletin Today.

While we leveraged the global navigation and architecture established during AARP’s Web site redesign, we wanted to incorporate the publication’s unique brand identity and mimic the print design aesthetic by including its original typography, editorials, cartoons, and other fundamental features existent in the publications design. This strategy provided readers with a seamless transition from print-to-web with the added value of Web 2.0 elements.

AARP Bulletin Today successfully launched as a fully-loaded, user-centered online community publication.

Behavior was retained by Pace Wildenstein, a premier art gallery, to create a manageable Web-based application enabling their administrative staff to manage exhibitions.

We designed the Exhibition Schedule Application (ESA) which serves as a single, easy-to-use system where administrators from various locations can input, revise and maintain information relating to the intricate planning and execution of an event.

ESA is a color-coded linear timeline that enables users to visualize overlapping events, import calendars, and access notes in different formats and modes of viewing. ESA illustrates timelines by quarters, tracks the specifics of each show, and details related information such as dates, locations, event types, and identifies the person who last made modifications.

Odilon Redon was a Nineteenth Century French Symbolist painter whose bizarre and startling black and white oeuvres were influenced by writings of Edgar Allen Poe and other authors of the time. His recent winter exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art was titled, "Beyond the Visible: The Art of Odilon Redon."

To recreate a sense of mystery and dwelling in the unknown or subconscious, Behavior developed a dynamic, flash-based site that empowers users to explore works from his career. A rich, dark color palette was used to reflect the blackness of Redon’s early "noirs". The site is segmented into "Monsters", "Metamorphosis", and "Tales" which represent themes that appear throughout Redon's work. This approach encourages users to explore his oeuvres through a fixed lens, learing about the works on a deeper level within detail pages that examine the influence of his drawings through the context of the writings.

An interactive kiosk version of the site accompanied the physical exhibition. Its central location in the middle of the gallery space enabled viewers to experiece some of the works and use the kiosk as a learning aid to discover deeper thematic relationships between Redon's art and his inspiration.

The AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) Design Forum is a community space for featured articles by AIGA staff to be spotlighted and discussed by AIGA members. Behavior was hired to reinvent the look and feel of the forum, and we also designed an interactive calendar featuring AIGA events, exhibitions, design competitions, and student groups.

The end result was an increase in traffic, a more appreciative user community, and better quality content throughout the forum—not to mention accolades from a graphic design community that never hides its criticism.
