Odilon Redon, a 19th Century French Symbolist painter and graphic artist, was greatly influenced by the vivid writings of Edgar Allen Poe and contemporaries in both literature and music. He created bizarre and startling oeuvres through his dark imagination-smiling spiders, frightening fauna, and mysterious figures abound. He worked exclusively outside the realm of color, mastering black & white charcoal drawings and lithography through a large portion of his career.
The Museum of Modern Art asked Behavior to create a site for the Beyond the Visible: The Art of Odilon Redon exhibition that would capture the essence of this influential artist. An homage to the mystery and unknown of the subconscious dwelling, Behavior focused on bringing Redon’s early ‘noirs’ to life.
We created a dynamic, flash-based experience that channels works through an abyss of blackness, textures and exploratory concepts. A thematic approach-Monsters, Metamorphosis, and Tales-details writings and the influences that provide context for Redon’s mastery.
