Rome, HBO’s decadent original series directed by Bruno Heller, describes the life of the Roman Empire’s extravagantly wealthy contrasted with the crumbling foundations of a city rife with corruption and excess.
The online feature highlights this unique production’s consideration and treatment of the moral, political, and urban ways of life of the ancient Republic, while revealing the huge production undertaking involving extensive historical research and elaborate costume and set design.
We collaborated with HBO to create an original, media-rich narrative around six themes that run through the series, focusing on Roman city life, power and politics, superstition and morality, war, money and class, and sex. Each theme is explored through a Flash-based interface which examines the historical context of a theme, how the theme connects with the creative vision of the series, and how that vision is translated into the production.
